Many names of the Wilmott family appear in the records as they usually
held the principal offices in the Portbury hundred.
The Hundred
Court Records.
1657 Complaint by one Richard Lott of Portbury, to the Quarter Session
that “while he and others were drinking at Portbury Inn, it being Lawday Court
for the hundred of Portbury, William Wilmott one of the high constables being
overtaken with drink did abuse and beat him, while the other constable, Spoore,
did not attempt to keep the peace.”
The Court Books that survive are held in the Bristol Record Office.
The Willmott name appears in the Tithe awards for the area, either
owning the land or renting the land. As there are many gaps in the Church
records it is difficult to know exactly which areas of land belongs to the
different families. One must therefore follow the tradition of land being
handed down to the first born son, if living, when the head of the family died.
At North Weston in 1760 it is recorded that John and Mary Willmot owned lands
and later, William Willmott born around 1789 at North Weston owned the majority
of the Willmott lands. It would therefore appear that William is the son of
John and Mary Willmott.
When William occupied the lands his mother? Mary still owned the lands.
William b. in 1738 fits the bill.
At Portishead the land occupied by John Willmot (probably the same John
noted above) was later occupied by Augustus, John and Charles Wilmott.
These names are from the Walton in Gordano families. The John Willmot at
Walton in Gordano b. 1632 is the eldest son of John and Mary (Phillips)
Willmott who lived at North Weston in Gordano. John and Mary Phillips were
married by marriage license a sign of coming from a wealthy family. John
probably inherited the lands on the death of his father in 1693. When John died
the lands should have passed to his son, John or Joseph. As John appears to
have been married twice it is difficult to be sure of this. However it does
appear that Josephs’ children, John, Charles and Augustus eventually inherited
or benefited by the North Weston Willmott lands.

Transportation.
Mary Hipsley of Yatton who married Joseph Willmott in about 1820,
reported on oath that:
*‘After we had been
married about five or six years the said Joseph Willmott was convicted of
felony and sentenced to transportation for the term of his life. The said
Joseph Willmott was transported accordingly to New South Wales and I heard from
him shortly after his arrival there. It was within two years after his
conviction that I so heard from him. On the sixth day of February in the year
1830 and not having heard of the said Joseph Willmott for more than seven years
I married Charles Moore of Yatton aforesaid by whom I have since has two
children namely Mary aged two years and Martha aged about six months both of
whom are now living with me. Since I so married the said Charles Moore I have
heard of my said husband Joseph Willmott and that he was alive so late as the
31st day of December 1830…..after he was transportd and whilst I was
living in the said parish of Yatton I received relief for several years from
the Overseers of the poor.’
