Visit of the Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells.

The Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells arrived this day at Naish House, the Seat of James Adams Gordon Esqr:

M.P. High Sheriff of the County and on the next day (Wednesday) Accompanied the High Sheriff in his State Carriage to the Parish Church of Portbury, where his Lordship was met by the Clergy, and Divine Service was performed to a very numerous and attentive Congregation, which being ended his Lordship with his son the Venerable and Reverend Henry Law A. M. Archdeacon and Canon of Wells proceeded to the altar and held a Public Confirmation, of which solemn and most Sacred Rite 500 Persons were partakers. The whole of the service was conducted in the most impressive manner and at the conclusion his Lordship delivered an Address to the Candidates. His Lordship and the Archdeacon afterwards inspected the very beautiful and highly finished Gothic Building lately erected near the Church by the above mentioned James Adams Gordon Esq M.P. the Lord of the Manor of Portbury, and returned with him, accompanied by the Clergy, to Naish House, where an elegant Entertainment was provided by the High Sheriff, who with his usual hospitality and kind attention to the Clergy most handsomely requested their Company during the remainder of the Day, and previous to the hour of Dinner went with them along the beautiful drive behind Naish House towards Cadbury Camp and through the Park at Clapton to his Old Manor house in that Parish, and thence to Clapton Church, so remarkable for the beauty of its Architecture and its quiet secluded situation embowered among trees and delightful scenery. The high Sheriff was accompanied in the Walk by Colonel Brigstock, the owner of the Tower House, Wraxall, the Revd: Henry Mirehouse A.M. Prebendary of Sailsbury and Vicar of Easton in Gordano, the Revd: John Noble Shipton A.D. Rector of Hinton Blewitt and Curate of this Parish: the Revd: George Meaker Valentine A.B. of Trinity College Cambridge, Curate of Portishead: the Revd: Mr. Butts Curate of Nailsea, the Revd: Mr. Greaves, Curate of Tickenham and others of the Neighbouring Clergy.
